THE GENDER FACTOR: MEN AND WOMEN PLAY DIFFERENTLY
Understanding the gender factor.
Women are now a force to be reckoned with at the poker table. Twenty years ago few women could
be seen in the poker room. Now that it has become more socially acceptable to play poker, there
tends to be more women at the table. Of the approximately 75 million poker players in the United
States, 35 percent of them are women..and growing.
Questions???? THE GENDER FACTOR
Do men play differently with women than other men?
Does the testosterone in men make them more aggressive and impatient?
Does this provide an advantage for women?
Absolutely..yes!
Women "in general"( please excuse some of the generalizations used here) tend to be more patient
than men. Poker is a game of patience. So it would follow that, in general, women can be better poker players
than men.
While we are being patient we are also learning about the other players at the table. For most
women,it is common practice to pick up non verbal clues and to analyze the behaviors
of others. This skill comes mainly from child rearing where women are often called upon to
understand the needs of a baby before it can speak.
These skills makes poker a perfect sport for most women because it is part of our
nature to analyze and study others behaviors. Understanding the behavior of your opponents
on the table is the key ingredient to being a champion player. The good news as a women you
have been trained in your life to do this subconciously. Some people might call this
women's intuition. I think it is just a way of understanding behavior better than men
and it happens to give an advantage at the table.
AGRESSIVE BEHAVIOR AT THE POKER TABLE
Most women in the face of aggressive behavior tend to shy away. While man to man
they may go head to head with this aggression. In general, most women will reserve their energy
and focus on the hand of poker being played. In general, the male aggression tends to be
distracting to the brain power you need to play the game of poker.
PLAYING TIGHT
Many women play a tight game which can appear to be weak. Men feel that they can run over women
who play this way because their table image appears weak. Often women need to be aggressive in
their play which is not a sterotypical role for most women.
It is important to not allow the male aggression to become personal or to lose focus while playing
the game. Do what we as women do best and study the behavior and at the right moment you can find your
aggressive game.
